In general, a burial is more expensive than a cremation. In the UK, the average cost of a cremation is £3,885 whereas the average cost of a basic burial is £5,033*.
A cost which is often overlooked when arranging a funeral is the cost of a gravestone or memorial. The cost varies depending on the size, style, material, and wording you choose. As well as the burial fees and memorial costs, there are also additional charges for gravedigging and the upkeep of the plot. These costs are not always applicable for cremation.
A cremation gives you choice in where your loved one’s final resting place will be. There are many places to scatter ashes, a place that holds great memories for you and your family, a garden of remembrance or having them at home, in a special urn. Many of these options may also cost far less than a headstone in a cemetery.
